“It was in part inspired by watching the Harry Potter films evolve and seeing the audience grow up with the kids and realising that's never really done in animation,” says director Dean DeBlois of this decision to focus the trilogy around the coming-of-age story. The newly-released third offering, How to Train Your Dragon: the Hidden World, concludes their rite of passage from childhood to adulthood in a way that makes for a satisfying and emotive finale for the well-loved franchise.
Throughout the series, we follow young Viking Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his dragon buddy Toothless as they not only tackle new adventures but also grow up, their characters evolving and maturing both physically and mentally film to film. While Vikings and dragons might be par for the course in fantasy films, the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy captures something rather more unusual in the world of animation: the ageing process.
